Beskrivelse

The story in English

A Mermaid is a female, a preternatural sea being, with a tale of a fish. She was known in mythology since the 2nd century BC and in Europe since the 600th century, where her picture can be found on Greek vases.

In Denmark, you can find Mermaids in fresco paintings from the Middle Ages and in folksongs since the 1500th century. She also appears in many legends and fairy-tales, where she is often described as very beautiful with well-formed white breasts and with long blond hair. It is also said that her singing lures men to the bottom of the sea.

She has given inspiration to many artists, including writers, sculptors and composers. The best known example was the performance of the ballet “The Little Mermaid” written by H.C. Andersen (1837) and which were performed in 1909 at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. As a consequence of that performance, “The Little Mermaid” the bronze sculpture created by Edvard Eriksen was placed at “Langelinie” in the harbour of Copenhagen in 1913. The sculpture is 1.25 meters high and placed on a stone in the water. Today “The Little Mermaid” is the national symbol of Denmark.
