Beskrivelse

The story in English

In former times the pixie was also called “Gaardbo”- in Sweden he was called “Tomte” and in Norway “Gardvord” These are all names which prove that the pixie was regarded as a kind of protector or, maybe, a spirit.

“Nis” or “Nisse” is a shorter version of the boys name Niels. “Nisse” is also a name, not only a (Danish) word for Pixy! It is possible that it was originally a form of nickname.

In the winter 1836, a Danish Christmas celebration was held in Rome in the apartment of the painter Constantin Hansen. For that occasion the host had decorated the apartment with pixies cut from paper, some bringing presents, some eating porridge etc. This is the first time we know that someone made pixies especially for Christmas.
Constantin Hansen (1804 -1880) is therefore, in so far, known as the “Father of the Christmas Pixies”.

The Christmas Pixy became very popular among people and soon became part of the old fashioned Christmas! The first (and still existing) picture of a Christmas Pixy is from 1845 and was drawn by J.T. Lumbye; this also took place in Rome!
